How to keep the weight off

Almost all the attention goes to losing it. The part that lasts longer, and decides more, gets almost none.

Reading time about 6 minutes

A meaningful share of what people lose comes back within a year or two of stopping. That is not a moral failing and it is not unusual — it is what happens when the thing that was making the loss possible stops, and nothing was built underneath it.

The uncomfortable part is the timing: the best moment to prepare for regain is the moment you feel furthest from it. Everything that protects you later has to exist before you need it, which means the work belongs to now, while things are going well.

Your calorie needs shrink as you get smaller

A lighter body needs less energy to maintain itself. What was a deficit at your starting weight can be close to maintenance at your new one, with identical eating habits. This is expected and predictable, and it catches almost everyone.

It is also why lean mass matters so much for maintenance specifically: muscle is most of what determines how much you burn at rest. Losing muscle during the loss makes holding the new weight harder for the rest of your life — a bill that arrives late and never stops.

Four habits that survive, and six that do not

The habits that hold are the ones that never depended on willpower or on suppressed appetite. They tend to look unremarkable:

What does not survive: anything requiring daily willpower, anything depending on an appetite you will not always have, anything you would be embarrassed to explain, anything with an end date, anything you started because it worked for someone else, and anything that treats a bad day as a failure rather than a Tuesday.

Catch it at five percent, not sixty

Regain does not arrive as an event. It accumulates while everything still feels fine, and by the time it is obvious it represents months of drift. The people who hold their weight are not the ones with more discipline — they are the ones who noticed earlier.

Early signals, worth acting on:

Every one of those is reversible in a week at five percent. At sixty percent it is a project. The whole skill is looking while looking is still cheap.

Build the baseline while it is easy

You cannot notice drift without a baseline, and a baseline recorded during the good months is worth far more than one reconstructed from memory later. Four things, none of which cost anything:

None of this is medical advice. What is appropriate for you depends on your situation and your treatment, and those questions belong with your clinician — ideally with these numbers in hand, which is a far better conversation than arriving with none.
